Frequently Asked Questions

Nine states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire only taxes dividend and interest income (being phased out by 2027). However, these states may have higher sales or property taxes to compensate.

For a household earning $75,000, moving from California (top rate 13.3%) to Texas (no income tax) could save $3,000-$8,000 annually depending on filing status. High earners ($200,000+) can save $10,000-$25,000+ per year. Use our calculator for your specific income.

Generally, you pay state income tax where you physically perform work. If you live in a no-income-tax state and work remotely, you typically don't pay state income tax regardless of where your employer is headquartered. However, some states have "convenience of the employer" rules (NY, CT, DE, NE, PA) that may require taxation if you work remotely by choice.

New Jersey, Illinois, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut have the highest effective property tax rates (1.8-2.5% of home value annually). Hawaii, Alabama, Louisiana, Wyoming, and Colorado have the lowest (0.3-0.6%). Use our calculator to compare property tax costs at your home value.

Tax savings should be one factor among many. Also consider: cost of living, salary differences, state services, climate, proximity to family, and lifestyle. A no-income-tax state with high property and sales taxes may not be cheaper overall. Use our Cost of Living Comparison Calculator along with this tax calculator for a full picture.
